The Boyne Tannum HookUp management committee are delighted to announce that with the support of the State Government Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher the 25th HookUp is going to be celebrated. The revised format will embrace technology to meet the Covid-19 requirements of the Federal Government and Chief Medical Officer’s advice that non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled.
HookUp President Jennifer McGuire said “our committee considered numerous workarounds; such as cancelling, postponing or hosting the fishing competition with multiple weigh-in locations so as crowds of people did not meet in Bray Park. The downside of these workarounds is the event cashflow tightening because the boats are paid for and currently being fitted out. So seeing the boats are ready to be presented we can utilise technology and live stream the draws each night via Facebook. This means that people can register to enter to win a boat while sitting in their own home, and collect it from us over the 3-days the fishing competition would normally be held or within the next week from the Gladstone region.”
“This innovative solution ensures that if a minimum of 3,000 HookUp tickets are sold the random prize draw will go ahead under the State’s Gaming Regulation with a Licence fast-tracked by Glenn Butcher. This means that the event stays afloat financially, sponsors are recognised for their support and funding and we maintain the fishing tourism profile of the Gladstone Region. There are so many people negatively impacted by the current pandemic. So the committee voted unanimously to share some joy in this uncertain time and have people still participate even if they are socially isolating. Covid-19 has made the committee understand we need to future-proof our huge family fishing competition even further.” Jennifer said.
“The committee has a lot to do in reworking the interim HookUp rules for this year, and to engage with our valued sponsors, community groups, stallholders, park contractors and the local community. More details will follow in the next week as to how we are going to do this.” Jennifer McGuire
